Description
Traditionally, The Genetics Of Livestock Has Been Based On The Phenotypic Characteristics Of Animals. However, The Explosion In Our Understanding Of Mammalian Genome And Accompanying Technological Innovations Has Opened Up New Avenues In Farm Animal Genetic Research. Advances In Molecular Genetics During The Last Two Decades Have Been Phenomenal And The Researchers Are More Inclined To Use GenomicTools To Solve Their Research Questions. Molecular Markers Especially DNA Markers That Are Capable Of Revealing Genetic Variations At DNA Level Are Now Key Players In Animal Genetic Research Programs. Various DNA Markers Like Restricted Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP), Short Tandem Repeats (Microsatellites), Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP), Etc. And DNA Sequencing Methods Are Increasingly Used By Researchers Not Only For Marker Based Genetic Improvement Programs But Also In Conservation Genetics To Analyze The Diversity And Relationship Of Livestock Populations. These DNA Markers Possess Unique Genetic Properties Which Help Researchers Overcome The Limitations Of Classical Genetic Markers Like Morphological, Biochemical And Protein Markers. However, There Are Only Limited Literatures That Deal With The Ways And Means Of Analyzing Genetic Markers With Special Emphasis On Farm Animals. The Present Book Is An Attempt In This Direction To Compile The Theoretical Information And Practical Methods Available For Genome Analysis Of Domestic Animals. The Book Has Three Main Sections: Part I Deal With DNA Markers Available For Genome Analysis In Farm Animals. The Basic Principles And Properties Of Various DNA Markers Like RFLP, Microsatellites, Snps, Etc. And Their Applications In Livestock Have Been Dealt In Detail In The First Four Chapters While The Methods Of Gene Mapping And Differential Gene Expression Analysis Are Dealt In The Fifth And Sixth Chapters. Part II Focusses On Practical Aspects Of Different Tools Used For Genome Analysis Of Farm Animals Including Preparation Of Metaphase Chromosomes, Physical Mapping Using Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization, Polymerase Chain Reaction, Agarose And Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis, DNA Sequencing, Real Time PCR Applications, Etc. Part III Gives A Brief Overview On Different Bioinformatics Tools With Special Emphasis On Designing Oligonucleotide Primers And Analysis Of DNA Sequences Generated In The Laboratory. Our Aim Is To Provide Readers The Theoretical Background And Practical Steps Involved In The Analysis Of Most Commonly Used DNA Markers In Livestock. We Hope That This Book Has Useful Information Pertinent To The Needs Of Students And Researchers Of Farm Animal Genetic Research.
